A professional horse rider has died after falling into water during a competition.

Georgie Campbell, 36, is believed to have fallen at the log into water at the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon earlier this afternoon.

Medical staff were at the scene immediately, but she was pronounced dead.

Governing body British Eventing said in a statement on Sunday: ‘It is with deepest regret that we announce that Georgie Campbell (GBR) suffered a fatal accident whilst competing at the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon, England, on Sunday.

‘Medical professionals attended immediately following her fall at fence 5b, however, unfortunately, she could not be saved.

‘The horse, Global Quest, was assessed by the on-site vets and walked back to the stable and is uninjured.

Georgie and her horse rider husband Jesse Campbell – who she married in December 2020 – hailed from Kent, though Jesse is originally from New Zealand.

Georgie’s eventing career took off after a childhood spent as a top-level showing rider.

She was shortlisted for the British Junior Team as a teen, making her five-star debut in 2009.

She has also made multiple appearances for Team GB on Nations Cup teams.

Georgie competed in more than 200 events, winning on six occasions including five-star events Badminton and Burghley.

Georgie was taking part in the CCI4*-S race on the cross country course when she fell.

The Bicton International Horse Trials is a four-day event which began on Thursday.
