Ram Tough

The Los Angeles Rams have suddenly thrust themselves back into the NFC playoff picture courtesy of a three-game win streak with them at 6-6. On Sunday, the Rams defeated the Browns 36-19 at home thanks to a three-touchdown pass day from quarterback Matt Stafford. In all, Stafford finished 22-of-37 for 279 yards and has now thrown eight touchdown passes to just two interceptions in the Rams’ last three games. His three touchdown passes on the day went to Puka Nacua, Demarcus Robinson and Cooper Kupp. Stafford was given time in the game thanks to an offensive line which did not allow a sack to the Cleveland Browns’ top-rated defense. The Rams are now tied with four teams at 6-6 as they battle for the last two wild card spots in the NFC.

“We came to life in the most important moments,” coach Sean McVay said. “If we continue to play this way, then you continue to have conversations where you’re relevant to maybe earn an opportunity to play afterwards.”

The Rams have steadily improved over their last three games, riding the 3-game win streak into Baltimore. Over the course of those games, the Rams are fourth in scoring offense. They are also third in rushing offense thanks to the healthy return of running back Kyren Williams, who scored a rushing touchdown on Sunday. They are also 11th in passing and 11th in turning red zone opportunities into touchdowns. Defensively, the Rams are 7th in scoring defense over the last three weeks. They are ninth against the run and 20th against the pass in that same timespan. They haven not been as effective in preventing red zone touchdowns, ranked just 22nd in the NFL.

Key Injuries: WR P. Nacua (shoulder) probable. LB B. Young (knee), LB M. Hoecht (knee), TE T. Higbee (neck), and DB Q. Lake (hamstring) are all questionable.

Ravens Top of the Flock

The Baltimore Ravens come into this big matchup with the Rams looking to keep pace with the Miami Dolphins atop the AFC standings. The Ravens are 9-3 and keep winning despite some significant injuries, including the season-ending injury to All-Pro TE Marc Andrews. Two weeks ago, Baltimore used a balanced attack, including a breakout game from rookie wideout Zay Flowers, and rolled to a 20-10 road victory over the Chargers. Flowers finished the game with a touchdown grab and a game-clinching touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Baltimore before heading out on their bye week. Quarterback Lamar Jackson finished the night 18-of-32 passing and had 39 yards rushing. The defense forced four turnovers while the offense showed strong balance with 197 yards rushing and 177 yards passing. Afterward, Jackson wanted to talk about his rookie wideout.

“I’ve been waiting for him to score multiple TDs in a game. Having that last one with the run was nice,” said Jackson about Flowers, who was the 22nd overall pick in April’s draft.

The Ravens return to action off of a bye week, refreshed and ready to close out the season strong. Over the course of the last three weeks prior to this game, Baltimore has been eighth in scoring offense in the NFL. The Ravens are first on the ground but just 18th through the air, something that Flowers’ breakout game might help. The Ravens are 14th in the NFL in converting red zone opportunities into touchdowns in recent weeks. Defensively, the numbers have dropped over the past three weeks. The Ravens are 15th in scoring defense over that time span. They are 29th against the run but a solid fifth against the pass. The continue to be stubborn in the red zone, fifth in the NFL in preventing red zone touchdowns.

Key Injuries: LB T. Simpson (concussion) and CB M. Humphrey (calf) are both listed as probable. QB L. Jackson (illness), LB M. Harrison (groin), DT J. Madubuike (concussion), WR R. Bateman (illness), and CB D. Williams (ankle) are all questionable.

Based on their recent track record, it is hard to bet against the Ravens against an NFC opponent. Baltimore has won seven straight against NFC opponents heading into Sunday’s matchup in Baltimore. They are tops in the AFC at 9-3 and are a perfect 3-0 against the NFC this season. The Rams present a difficult matchup for the Ravens as they’ve been playing lately. LA heads East on a three-game win streak and with a renewed offense thanks to the return to health of Stafford, Kupp, and Williams. Stafford has thrown eight touchdowns during the win streak with just two interceptions. Kupp looked a bit more like himself last week as he continues his progression from a major injury last season and Williams has provided the Rams a spark out of the backfield. Williams also matches up with a Ravens’ defense that has struggled against the run over the last three weeks, dropping to just 29th against the rush. The Rams have also been a surprising 9th in the NFL against the run over the last three weeks. I also really like the additional hook in this game with the 7.5 points. This should be a back-and-forth battle that looks like a one-score game to me.

While overall, the Ravens’ defense has been very good this season, a deeper dive into recent weeks reveals a defense that is having some issues. The Ravens have several injuries to the front seven that have not been completely resolved based on the injury designations that came out this week. They are 29th against the run in the last three games and now just 15th in scoring defense over that same span. The Rams come in having gone over the total in two straight games. Stafford shines when he has a running game and Williams has provided him with that. The Ravens are fully capable of putting up points as well, particularly off of a bye.

Take the over.
