NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – February 7 marked the 38th annual National Women In Sports Day.
This day was officially recognized in 1987 by United States President Ronald Reagan and has continued to grow ever since. Saturday the North Platte Community College women’s basketball took part in the special day. The Knights offered free admission to their afternoon game against Central Community College and even had a special autograph session following the game.
This gave the team a special chance to meet their fellow fans and students and to also encourage and inspire young girls that they can indeed accomplish their dreams of playing at the next level for Knights coach Jeff Thurman having his players celebrate means everything to him.
“Oh, it’s paramount right to recognize no matter what level of sport it really is, no matter what level of girls or women’s sports it is. It is extremely important that they are recognized because they put in just as much time as the boys and men’s side. Again I am just so proud of them and could not be more blessed to be around this great group,” Thurman said.
Coach Thurman also said that for these players being role models for younger girls playing sports makes his job even more special.
