THE PREDICTION

World number 40 Richard Gasquet won the 16th ATP title of his career at the start of the season with a remarkable comeback over Cam Norrie but he has won just three of his eight matches since. The 36-year-old has enjoyed something of a renaissance in this late stage of his career and it will be fascinating to see how far he can climb this season. World number 86 Christopher O’Connell is creeping up to his career-high ATP world ranking of 76th set late last year after a recent run to the quarter-finals at the Qatar Open saw him take the only set from eventual champion Daniil Medvedev’s campaign. The Aussie is making his second Masters appearance after scraping through as a lucky loser from qualifying this week but that second chance is always a tough force for an opponent to have to combat. Back Gasquet to earn at least a set given the circumstances and consider adding at least a tiebreak here with both players well-versed to playing them in recent months.
