After months of deliberation, Gareth Southgate is set to announce his 26-man squad for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

UK betting sites have been updating their markets for months to match the rise and fall of possible candidates.

This will be Southgate’s fourth major tournament in charge of England and selection could be the toughest yet.

It could be the last time the 53-year-old leads his country into a major tournament in this current spell, but Southgate admits talks to extend his contract beyond this summer’s tournament are not a distraction.

Under Southgate, England reached the final of Euro 2020 and are among the favourites to go the distance at Euro 2024. So who’s likely to be on the plane to Germany this summer?

Goalkeepers

Jordan Pickford (1/16) has been Southgate’s first-choice goalkeeper since his appointment as England manager in 2016, with the Everton shot-stopper expected to be the Three Lions’ number one at Euro 2024.

Aaron Ramsdale (4/11) may have fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal, but Nick Pope’s continued absence due to a dislocated shoulder, means Ramsdale is the second keeper most likely to be on the plane according to football betting sites.

The injury to Pope has seen his price drift to 7/2, which is still someway ahead of fifth favourite Dean Henderson who is 8/1 to be given the nod.

Sam Johnstone is therefore the third favourite to take the last goalkeeper spot at 2/5. But even if he makes the England squad for Euro 2024, it’s unlikely that he will feature.

The Dead Certs

Three outfield players are priced at 1/10 or shorter with BetVictor to make the squad: Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka.

Four more – Declan Rice, Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden – are priced between 1/6 and 1/8, while John Stones, Harry Maguire, Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold (1/4 or 1/5) also look set to join them in Germany.

Defenders

Levi Colwill (11/8) has now fell behind Chelsea teammate Ben Chilwell (1/2) in the eyes of Bet365 when it comes to competing for a spot on the left side of the defence.

Jarrad Branthwaite (1/2) is the biggest market mover after a solid season with Everton. The 21-year-old earned a first international call-up for England’s friendlies with Brazil and Belgium and is expected to be named in the squad.

Marc Guehi is priced at 11/10 to make Southgate’s squad, while Lewis Dunk can be backed at 6/5 after impressing at the heart of Brighton’s defence for the past 18 months or so.

Ezri Konsa (11/4) made his first appearance for the Three Lions in the recent 1-0 defeat to Brazil, but the centre-back was not selected for the 2022 World Cup by Southgate.

Manchester United’s Luke Shaw can be found at 6/4 on betting apps, but he hasn’t played since February 18 because of a muscle problem.

Alexander-Arnold hasn’t always been one of Southgate’s favourites, but the Liverpool right-back is still widely expected to be an important part of England’s squad for Euro 2024, potentially replacing James (3/1) as Trippier’s main challenger.

Another Reds defender, Joe Gomez, is now odds-on at 4/6 to board the plane, while Jarell Quansah’s development under Jurgen Klopp this season could see the Liverpool defender make Southgate’s squad.

Midfielders

Declan Rice

Rice has made himself the anchor in England’s midfield unit under Southgate and this is reflected in his price of 1/6 to be included in the squad for this summer’s Euros.

He looks set to join Bellingham (1/12) in midfield who has made a sensational start to life at Real Madrid with the 20-year-old already something of a leader for club and country.

Kalvin Phillips was Rice’s midfield partner for England at Euro 2020 and the 28-year-old has remained part of the picture at international level despite barely featuring for Manchester City.

However, after making little impact during his loan move to West Ham for the rest of the season, Phillips is in danger of missing out this summer.

After a torrid time in Saudi Arabia, Jordan Henderson completed a move to Ajax in January, but it looks as though his absence from Southgate’s squad for the summer will bring an end to his international career.

Conor Gallagher is priced at 2/5 and Curtis Jones can be backed at 5/1, but it is 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo who has grabbed the headlines recently, and his impressive performances for Manchester United have seen him included in England’s initial squad.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton ends a remarkable season that began by playing for Blackburn, by being named in the provisional 30-man squad, ahead of Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.

Attacking Midfielders/Wingers

Saka (1/10) has been a consistent performer for England over the last two years and has the ability to produce a match-winning moment from his usual position on the right side of the Three Lions’ attack, so his inclusion looks inevitable.

Foden (1/8) has been the subject of much discussion as an England player with many of the belief that the Manchester City playmaker should be a more integral figure for the Three Lions.

Grealish (4/6) is another City winger with an important role to play for England, while James Maddison is priced at 2/5 to make the Euro 2024 squad after settling at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who scored three goals at the last World Cup, has been omitted from Southgate’s provisional squad to go to Germany.

Cole Palmer has enjoyed a positive start to life at Chelsea on a personal level, finishing second in the Golden Boot race with 22 goals.

The Blues top scorer is a 2/5 shot to appear at a first major tournament with England this summer.

West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen is priced at 6/5, while Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is available at 10/3 to be selected.

Anthony Gordon is 13/8 to appear in his first major tournament, while Raheem Sterling is offered at 12/1 to force his way back into the England fold for Euro 2024.

Strikers

England captain Kane (1/20) will, barring injury or suspension, lead the line for the Three Lions at Euro 2024 as the top scorer in the national team’s history.

Beyond Kane, Ollie Watkins could earn himself a place as Southgate’s leading deputy centre forward.

The Aston Villa striker, priced at 1/3 to be included in the squad for Euro 2024, has 32 goal contributions in 37 league matches for the Villans this season.

Southgate could use Rashford as a centre forward, but the 26-year-old hasn’t always looked comfortable playing through the middle for club and country.

This could leave a spot open for a third out-and-out striker with Brentford’s Ivan Toney priced at 11/10 to go to the Euros, while Bournemouth frontman Dominic Solanke (6/1) could sneak a spot.
